Mental Health Warriors: Amanda Gene
Welcome to Mental Health Warriors: Amanda Gene. Today, I would like to introduce you to Amanda from Amanda Gene. Last time, I introduced you to Esther from Hopeful Lotus. You can read her personal journey here.
Mental health is an issue that needs to be talked about, no matter how difficult it might be so I put up a form on my blog asking people to share their mental health journey. I am moved by the fact these people are willing to share their stories, even though I know it isn’t easy, just to raise awareness and touch the lives of some that might really be struggling and feeling alone.
Here is Amanda’s personal story about mental health, in her own words.
Do you deal with a mental illness?
Help me understand what it is like to live with this?
Sometimes I feel achy and unmotivated.
Have you dealt with this your whole life?
I think I have dealt with this off and on during my lifetime.
How old were you when you first got diagnosed or got help?
I found out in a vocational report that one doctor thought I was depressed back in 2009. I never knew about the results until years later. Then when I got help from therapy I was in my late 20’s.
What are some of the survival skills that help you get through a rough day or rough period?
I write, talk with friends, make to-do lists, set goals, and exercise. In 2015 through early 2018 I received outpatient therapy. However, I have also found that taking a warm bath helps.
Have you learned your triggers? Or have you learned how to spot when it is about to get bad?
I am still working on triggers. However, I am able to use my coping skills when I feel sad.
What is something you can tell people that have family members with a mental illness? Is there anything they can do to help?
Stay supportive. Remember to encourage them and to remind them that it is okay to reach out for help. Also reminding the person to stay on their treatment plan is a big help too.
Words of advice or encouragement?
Keep going and never give up!
I encourage you to check out these published works (and more) from Amanda Gene.
